Top six excursion destinations in Wipptal and the surrounding area
Our insider tips.
Lake Obernberg
Lake Obernberg impresses with its crystal-clear turquoise water and its location in the middle of a beautiful mountain panorama. The mountain lake lies at an altitude of 1,590m on the border with South Tyrol. Here, where the sky is reflected in the water, you will find peace and relaxation. The lake can be reached by a short climb from the car park. No matter what time of year you visit, hiking in Wipptal in Tyrol is always an experience.
Innsbruck’s old town
A trip to Wipptal is incomplete without a visit to Innsbruck’s old town. Against the mountain backdrop of the Nordkette mountain range, you can take a leisurely stroll through the many small alleys of the old town. In addition, there are some sights you should not miss: the Golden Roof, the Imperial Palace, the city tower, and the Cathedral of St James.
Stubai Glacier
Another highlight of a visit to Wipptal is definitely the Stubai Glacier. Its altitude of up to 3,210 metres guarantees snow from October to June. Attractive offers and many highlights, such as the ice grotto and the Top of Tyrol viewing platform, guarantee an unforgettable stay. Whether in summer or winter, the range of leisure activities is immensely varied and offers something for young and old alike.
Aqua Dome Tirol Therme Längenfeld
The Aqua Dome Therme in Längenfeld in Ötztal in Tyrol provide a wealth of relaxation and wellness. The highlight of this spa is certainly the three outdoor thermal pools, which with water temperatures of 28°C-34°C provide soothing relaxation, even in winter. The pools’ modern design contrasts with the idyllic mountain landscape in which they are nestled, creating an impressive effect.
St. Magdalena Pilgrimage Church
The pilgrimage church dedicated to St. Magdalena can be reached via several paths; however, we recommend leaving your car at the car park at the Magdalenahof (paid parking) and taking the asphalted path towards Pumafalle. You begin by strolling along a flat forest path until you reach the crossroad on the left of the forest path with a slight incline. The 14 stations that line the way to the pilgrimage church were designed by local craftspeople. When you arrive at the “Windgatterl” (wind gate), the inhabitants of Ellbögen and Patsch ironically ask you to close the gate behind you to stop the wind from entering their villages. Alternatively, since 2017 the little church can also be reached via a 500-metre via ferrata with 270 metres of elevation gain. Several places to sit have been installed so that you can enjoy the view over the entire valley. At the top, you will not only have an incomparable view over the entire Gschnitztal valley, but the innkeeper will also prepare you an incomparable plate of speck and eggs with bread or Kaiserschmarren (torn pancakes).
Mountaineering villages in Wipptal
In addition to St. Jodok, Schmirn, and Valsertal, the Gschnitztal was recognised as a mountaineering village in 2019. According to the Alpine Convention, these original mountain villages strive for sustainable development of the Alpine region. When hiking through these villages, you won’t meet many people, but you can enjoy the peace and quiet and find yourself on the mountain. The hiking options are inexhaustible, and the picturesque landscape is unbeatable. Enjoy a slice of untouched nature on a mountain hike, trekking tour, Alpine tour, climb, mountain bike tour, snowshoe hike, or ski tour. Whether in summer or winter, the strenuous climb to one of the many peaks is rewarded with breathtaking views.
